I took Kat’s bag filled with money, the gun, and my to-go bag to the garage and ensured the tunnel entrance door was working correctly. I climbed down the ladder, checked the flashlights at the bottom, and set them beside the bags, far enough away from the ladder so we wouldn’t trip on them if we had to rush down.

Satisfied that things were good, I climbed back up and closed the hatch but didn’t seal it. Something told me that seconds would count if we needed to leave quickly.

I was going to check on Kat, but before I did, I asked Grace, “What is Kat doing?”

“She’s asleep, Nick.”

“How long has she been asleep?”

“About an hour, Nick.”

“Okay, thanks, Grace.”

Ty, Wayne, and Rocky were sitting in the living room. “I’m going to head up and get some sleep in a minute,” I told them as I plopped into a chair near them.

“What were you doing in the garage?” Rocky asked. I had made sure that she was busy when I brought my backpack down. I didn’t need her asking questions.

“I hid Kat’s bag out there.”

“Good idea,” Rocky said and yawned. “I think I will head up to bed myself.” She stood, glancing at Ty. “You coming?”

“Yeah, might as well.”

“I’ll crash on the couch,” Wayne stated as the three of us got up. “Are there still blankets in the hall closet?”

“Yeah, there are some in there. Thanks for being here, Wayne.”

“You’re welcome.”

I headed up the stairs and brushed my teeth, then sat on the edge of the bed for a moment, wishing Katrina had come to sleep here. Not that I was in the mood for sex, but because I wanted her close.

I leaned back on the pillows, still dressed in my clothes, and closed my eyes. My sister was dead. The thought unnerved me, but it still hadn’t completely sunk in. Who was responsible for her death? Who put the device on her car that had caused her accident?

“Nick,” Grace’s voice was softer than usual, as if wondering if I was awake or not. She would know.

“Yes, Grace.”

“The silver Escalade passed the residence again at forty-six miles per hour.”

“Okay, thank you, Grace.”

“You’re welcome, Nick.”

I inhaled slowly, knowing that if I were to get any sleep, I would have to force myself to do it. I let my mind wander, and images of Sarah and me growing up played like an old home movie.

Somehow, I drifted off after a while.

“Nick, wake up!” I sat straight up in bed, looking around the room. I could have sworn my sister’s voice had called out to me.

“Sarah?”

“Nick, the car is back, and there are two more with it.”

“Where are they, Grace?”

“On the northeast side of the property.”

I was off the bed and heading out of the room. “Wake up Rocky and Ty. How many people?” I asked Grace as I started down the stairs. “Wayne! Get up!”

Wayne sat up, his eyes blurry. “What’s going on?”

“We have company!” I rushed toward the hallway as Grace’s voice came over the house speakers.
